The long-awaited tour of the US first lady to Africa is now real. The US first lady Melania Trump started her tour to Africa by first arriving in Ghana. On her arrival, she went to a hospital in the capital Accra. She is also expected to visit other African countries such as Kenya, Malawi, and Egypt.
The essence of her tour to Africa is to promote education and health to disadvantaged African families. This also comes after her husband the POTUS Donald Trump allegedly use the term “Shithole” to describe African countries. The visit to Africa is to take a week. In a tweet before departing, she said, “We are taking off for #Africa! So, looking forward to visiting Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Egypt.”
When Melania arrived in Ghana she was received by the Ghanaian first lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and went to Ridge Hospital. She over so how children were being weighed as her initiative is to ensure proper nutrition of African children. In addition, she is popularizing her Be Best Initiative which is there to promote and tackle matters such as cyberbullying and improve healthy living.
In a statement by her communications director Stephanie Grisham, “The first lady is interested in touring African countries because she has never been in Africa before and know that each country has its own unique culture.” Her other objectives are to see how the United States of America will continue supporting African countries through programmes such as USAID which is mandated with the education of children. Supporting wildlife conservation and HIV prevention in Kenya and Malawi respectively.
However, her visit to Africa has sparked a lot of reactions. But, her husband has said that they love Africa and it’s a beautiful continent. This is not the first time a FLOTUS is visiting Africa. Others like Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama have also visited Africa.
